2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge Black Edition Review

Intro

The 2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge Black Edition is a striking combination of luxury, performance, and electrification, wrapped in a sleek Scandinavian design. As one of Volvo’s most popular models, the XC60 continues to refine its formula, blending premium comfort with cutting-edge technology and safety features. This plug-in hybrid SUV stands out not just for its stylish appearance but also for its impressive electric range, powerful drivetrain, and refined interior. With a growing demand for electrified vehicles, Volvo’s Recharge lineup continues to impress, and the XC60 Black Edition is no exception.

Thanks to Volvo Canada, I had one week to test drive the 2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge. Below is my unbiased review.

Exterior

The XC60 Black Edition exudes a sophisticated yet aggressive presence on the road. Finished in Onyx Black, this edition eliminates chrome in favor of a stealthy, all-black aesthetic, giving it a modern and dynamic stance. The signature Thor’s Hammer LED headlights are both a functional and visual highlight, providing excellent nighttime illumination while contributing to the XC60’s unmistakable identity.

The 21-inch 5-Double Spoke High Gloss Black Alloy wheels add to the vehicle’s muscular appeal, filling out the wheel arches perfectly. The clean lines and subtle sculpting give the XC60 a timeless elegance, ensuring that it looks just as fresh today as when the second-generation model debuted in 2017. The Black Edition package elevates the XC60’s styling further, darkening Volvo’s iron mark badge and wordmark for an added level of exclusivity. It’s a design that feels both sophisticated and bold, without trying too hard to stand out.

Interior

The interior of the XC60 continues to impress with its impeccable Swedish craftsmanship. The interior is a masterclass in minimalist design, offering a balance of luxury and functionality. The Charcoal Ventilated Nappa Leather seats are supremely comfortable, with a firm yet supportive structure that ensures long drives remain fatigue-free. Volvo’s seats have always been among the best in the business, and this XC60 is no exception.

The Black Edition package extends the dark theme inside, with a black headliner and Metal Mesh Aluminum decor providing a high-tech, premium ambiance. The Orrefors crystal gear shift lever adds a touch of elegance, while the 12.3-inch Digital Driver Display presents crisp, customizable information. The panoramic sunroof floods the cabin with natural light, preventing the dark interior from feeling claustrophobic.

Passenger space is generous, with ample legroom and headroom in both rows. The rear seats are comfortable, though the middle seat is best suited for occasional use. Material quality throughout the cabin is top-notch, with soft-touch surfaces and high-grade finishes giving the XC60 a genuinely premium feel.

Infotainment

Volvo’s Google-based infotainment system is among the most intuitive in the industry. The 9-inch vertically oriented touchscreen is the command center, offering Google Maps, Assistant, and access to the Play Store. The interface is responsive, and the voice commands via Google Assistant work seamlessly. While previous Volvo infotainment systems have had occasional software hiccups, this iteration felt smooth and refined during my test drive.

A standout feature is the available Bowers & Wilkins audio system, a $3,750 option that delivers an immersive sound experience. With 15 speakers and over 1,400 watts of power, it produces crystal-clear highs and deep, resonant bass. Whether playing classical music or hip-hop, the system shines in its clarity and depth.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, though the integration isn’t wireless. A large volume knob below the screen is a welcome touch for quick adjustments, but some climate controls being tucked into the touchscreen can be frustrating while driving.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Safety remains a Volvo hallmark, and the XC60 Recharge is packed with cutting-edge driver assistance features. Standard equipment includes lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and intersection braking assist. These systems work seamlessly in the background, providing confidence without feeling intrusive.

The XC60 has earned a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS, thanks to its robust crash structure and active safety tech. The Pilot Assist system is particularly useful on highway drives, offering gentle steering assistance to keep the vehicle centered in its lane while adapting to traffic conditions. The head-up display ensures that vital information remains within the driver’s line of sight, further enhancing safety and convenience.

Driving Experience

The heart of the XC60 Recharge is its plug-in hybrid powertrain, which combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor. The result is a formidable 455 horsepower and 523 lb-ft of torque, making it one of the most powerful options in its segment. The standard all-wheel-drive system ensures optimal traction in various driving conditions.

Acceleration is brisk, with the XC60 launching from a standstill with an immediacy that’s characteristic of electric power. The Polestar Engineered Optimization package, a $1,400 option, further enhances throttle and transmission responsiveness, making passing maneuvers effortless. During my test drive, the XC60 managed an impressive electric-only range of almost 65km—well beyond its official 58 km estimate—allowing me to commute for days without using the gasoline engine.

When the engine does engage, it remains refined, though the transition between electric and gas power is occasionally noticeable. During my test drive, XC60 achieved an overall fuel consumption of 8.3 L/100 km—better than its official 8.5 L/100 km combined estimate.

Handling is composed, with the SUV feeling stable and controlled through corners. Steering is precise but lacks significant road feel. The ride is firm, especially with the 21-inch wheels and performance tires, but the optional air suspension helps smooth out rough patches.

Cargo Space & Storage

The XC60 is practical for daily use, though its cargo space falls short compared to some rivals. With the rear seats up, it offers 468 liters of cargo capacity. Folding the rear seats expands the space to 1,395 liters—sufficient for most needs, but not class-leading.

Interior storage is well thought out, with deep door pockets, a spacious center console, and a reasonably sized glovebox. The hands-free power tailgate adds convenience when loading groceries or luggage.

Conclusion

The 2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge Black Edition makes a strong case for itself as a luxury plug-in hybrid SUV. It combines elegant design, a well-appointed interior, impressive electric range, and strong performance into a compelling package. While its ride quality could be more compliant and cargo space trails some competitors, these are minor drawbacks in an otherwise excellent vehicle. The XC60 Recharge is an ideal choice for those seeking an electrified SUV that offers both luxury and practicality. Its popularity is reflected in Volvo’s growing sales figures, with 2024 models selling out fast in Canada. If you’re looking for a stylish, eco-friendly luxury SUV that doesn’t compromise on performance, the XC60 Recharge Black Edition is well worth the wait.
